Dracaena draco, commonly known as the dragon tree, is a striking evergreen tree native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and parts of Africa. It is renowned for its unique, thick, greyish-brown trunk that branches out into a rosette of long, narrow, sword-like leaves. The tree gets its name from the red resin it produces, known as “dragon’s blood,” which has historically been used for medicinal and dye purposes. Dracaena draco can grow up to 10 meters tall and is slow-growing, often taking many years to reach full maturity. It thrives in dry, well-drained soils with plenty of sunlight, making it a popular ornamental plant in arid and Mediterranean climates. Known for its distinctive appearance, the dragon tree is often used in landscaping and as a houseplant in suitable climates.
