Dyera costulata is a large tropical tree native to Southeast Asia, particularly found in Malaysia and Indonesia. It is renowned for its hard, dense timber, often referred to as “belian” or “Malaysian ironwood,” which is highly valued for its strength and resistance to decay. The tree can grow up to 50 meters tall, with a straight, thick trunk and a broad canopy. Its leaves are large and leathery, and it produces small, yellowish flowers that are grouped in clusters. Dyera costulata thrives in lowland rainforests, preferring well-drained, fertile soils. The tree’s timber is used in construction, furniture making, and shipbuilding. However, due to overharvesting, it is now considered endangered in some regions, prompting conservation efforts.
